Dos and Don’ts of Child Car Seat Safety

A child car seat must always be chosen on the basis of the baby’s weight but most car seat labels also provide age limits to help you pick the right seat for your baby. Knowing all there is to know about baby car seats can make your search for the appropriate seat not only easy but will ensure the safety of your child during travel as well. The three most basic things to keep in mind while car seat shopping is that the seat should fit your child, the seat should fit your car type and you must always be able to use the car seat correctly when your baby has to ride in it. Usually, infant-only car seats are preferable for new-borns and accommodate babies weighing up to 20 pounds; the base of these seats can be left attached in the car and the upper part acts as a child carrier and can be taken out of the car. Convertible car seats are used for infants and toddlers; they accommodate children weighing from 5 pounds to 40 pounds. They are used rear-faced for infants and then forward faced for toddlers. Buying and then using a car seat efficiently requires the application of a few important rules that can protect your child and preserve the car seat for long.

First of all, you should know the exact weight of your baby so that you know exactly what sort of weight limits you need for your car seat and exactly how long your baby will be able to use it. The car seat that you choose must pass safety regulations in your area so know what exactly they are. You should also check the compatibility of your car seat with your car by manually installing it before you buy it. Read the manufacturer’s instructions about the car seat, its installation and other tips on usage. Make sure that the baby car seat is never installed in front of an active airbag since the inflation of an airbag during a collision can cause harm to the baby. Read the instruction manual to know how to install the seat using the LATCH system in your car; there are different methods and belt paths for installing a car seat rear-faced and forward-faced. You can always check your vehicle’s manual to find out what type of belt system your car has, as some car seats require the use of locking clips to ensure further protection.

While installing the baby car seat, do put your weight on the seat while pulling the seat belt; the car seat should be installed tightly. Make sure that if your car seat has a harness retainer clip, it should be at the baby’s armpit level because otherwise the straps could slip off. The angle of the car seat should be just right for your infant, make sure that the angle of the car seat for an infant is around 45 degrees; neither too flat not too upright. Choose a baby car seat with a 5 point adjustable harness that do a better job at restraining your child securely. Make sure that you get a new car seat for your baby when it graduates from the previous one; try to make your child use a high backed booster seat until it is at least 8 years old.

Don’t get a used car seat especially if you don’t know its history since such seats can be unreliable. Used car seats may also have been recalled, have missing parts that you are unaware of or may have expired. Never put rear facing car seats in the front seat, especially ones with an airbag since the inflation of the airbag could harm the baby. Don’t use a forward facing car seat for a new born infant, they must always ride rear-faced till they weigh 20 pounds and are at least 6 months old. Don’t even place your booster seat in the front seat as children under the age of 13 must always ride in the back seat. Don’t forget to tighten the safety belt attachments; you can leave your baby car seat loose if you do so. Similarly, the harness straps must not be left loose either; if using the LATCH system in your car, don’t forget to check that all the tethers are attached correctly. Don’t forget to read all the guidelines in the instruction manual and check that they are all in place every time you put your baby in the car seat.

Apart from a child restraint system, you must be fully equipped with baby gear as well; keep a multi-purpose diaper bag that can keep a few of your personal items as well so that you don’t have to carry an extra purse. Fill this bag with lots of diapers, wipes, snacks, books, toys and a change of clothes for the baby. You can also carry your personal items like ticket, passport, identification and even a change of clothes. Child carriers like a baby sling or a lightweight stroller can assist you immensely on trips to carry the baby through the airport and the terminals. The stroller or baby carrier can be get-checked before boarding and it will be ready for you just as you get off the plane.
